What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage is a specialised massage method that targets the deeper layers of muscle and connective tissue.

As its name suggests, the techniques involve going “deeper” than traditional massage, directly targeting problem areas in the muscle tissue. Unlike traditional massage, deep tissue massage is used as an effective treatment for chronic pain, tightness, and limited mobility by targeting the underlying soft tissue structures.

Deep tissue massage therapists employ various techniques to release tension and break up any scar tissue that may be present in the muscle. This method helps to improve blood flow and reduce inflammation in the affected areas, which can accelerate healing and alleviate pain over time.

What are the Benefits of Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage can be highly effective in treating a variety of ailments, and can also help in optimise the following aspects of your daily life, no matter your activity level:

  • Pain relief: Deep tissue techniques can help relieve pain caused by tension in a targeted area like your back, neck, or shoulders. These techniques can also be used to help with chronic pain.
  • Improved mobility: Reducing muscle stiffness and promotion of mobility allow for better joint function and can improve your posture.
  • Stress reduction: Like with traditional massage, reducing muscular tension promotes the reduction of stress hormones and can help with your overall relaxation.
  • Injury recovery: Deep tissue massage aims to reduce inflammation, which can optimise and accelerate injury recovery. It can also work on scar tissue mobility to help you recover from injury or surgery.
  • Performance enhancement: Deep tissue massage helps maintain muscle health for active individuals. This can reduce risk of injury and promote efficient recovery following exercise.

Is Deep Tissue Massage Painful?

Deep tissue massage techniques are designed to directly target the affected muscle tissue, which involves the application of strong and focused pressure. Because of this, tightness and tension within muscles can sometimes make the area more sensitive, so some discomfort is common during the first few sessions.

This is why the team at Recover Physiotherapy, prioritise effective communication with you throughout your treatment in order to minimise pain discomfort.

It is normal to experience some aching in the 24-72 hours following your massage, but this will gradually subside, leaving you to enjoy the benefits of your deep tissue treatment. Our goal is to make sure you feel supported and comfortable, helping you get the best out of  your therapy.

What happens in a deep tissue massage session?

Prior to your session, your soft tissue therapist will send you a health screening form to complete. This form helps us understand your goals for the session, any current injuries, and any medical history that may impact your treatment.

At the beginning of your appointment at the Recover Physiotherapy clinic, you will have a confidential discussion with your therapist, which ensures we have all the information needed to make your session as effective and comfortable as possible. Based on the insights gathered from the health form and our discussion, your therapist will tailor the massage treatment to target the areas that best meet your needs.

Who Should Consider a Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage can be incredibly beneficial for people experiencing chronic pain, muscle tension, and limited mobility. It provides meaningful relief for conditions such as lower back pain, sciatica, and fibromyalgia. For athletes and active individuals, it supports muscle health, helps prevent injuries, and promotes quicker recovery after exercise.

However, we understand that deep tissue massage may not be suitable for everyone. If you have certain medical conditions, it’s important to consult your healthcare provider to determine if this treatment is right for you, especially in the following cases:

  • A blood clotting disorder
  • A recent surgery
  • Severe osteoporosis
  • Pregnancy

Additionally, for those with a cancer diagnosis or suspected cancer, deep tissue massage may not be appropriate, and an Oncology massage could be a better fitted treatment. Your well-being is our top priority, and we are here to support you in finding the safest and most effective treatment for your needs.
